Sun Sand And Holidays

27 May

The beach is my absolute favorite place in the world. I am the happiest sitting on the beach, doesn’t matter where in the world it is or what time it is. After 4 months of freezing in State College, I was grateful for the trip to Goa with my best friend and 3 of her college friends.

The warm sun, sand between your toes, water gently lapping at your feet, breeze in your hair and ice cold beer in your hand is the best way to spend the day. We were only gone for 3 and a half days and they were super relaxed full of good sea food and alcohol. No crazy drunk stories, just chilled out laughter and gossip. It was exactly what I wanted and am dying to go back to. It was a little off season so most of the great restaurants and cafes were shut but we still managed to find some shacks with excellent food and had the time of our life.

Cool stares?

Cheesy and cliched but that’s what life’s about :P

Conclusion To The Start

26 Apr

My first semester here at PSU is almost over. 3 days and a week of exams is all that’s left. It seems strange to be going back home already because I feel like I just got here. At the same time it also feels like I have been here forever and I am actually pretty excited to be going home for a while (Come one, Laundry, good food and my dog. Do I need more?).

As the semester comes to a close I thought I would do a photo diary kind of post. I have not been on top of my blog as much as I would have liked and I hope to change that in these coming months. I am sure that there have been many things I could have told you guys about, from Blue and white weekend to the various concerts I have attended here to just all the crazy stuff that happens every day.

This photo post should hopefully create an outline of my first semester and how much I have come to love certain parts of this college. :)

(For anyone who’s photo isn’t in this post, doesn’t mean I love you any less. Just have way too many photo’s)

Mail :) It’s one of my favorite parts of college. Yes it’s old and slow but it’s one of the most exciting things and actually very touching sometimes.

Frozen Yogurt from Kiwi! OMG SO GOOD. I am addicted. It is horrible but so delicious! :)

Raspberry smoothies from the mix. Oh hell yeah. It's no wonder I gained the freshman 15. Haha

My lovely friends. :) and Pollock Prom

Ellisica ;) (No that's not her real name)

Lying in the quad and soaking the sun (on the rare days that it makes an appearance)

The completely random things you can find on campus sometimes. Yes each leaf has been encased in a bulb.

Late night at the HUB :)

The Berkey Creamery. WOW. Really is the best ice cream around. Just WOW.

The fact that I can wear boots and not look stupid or sweat my feet off.

The snow, the scenery, the hidden spots that are almost deserted.

Studying. HAHA. Not really but some of the time, I actually do. Especially when I am in the library. Too far it's so far and I can't be bothered to walk all the way there every day. I would be quite productive if I lived right by it.

THON 2012!
I loved every bit of THON and it is actually one of the events I did blog about so check it out :)

Diamonds up in the sky! FTK.

Ducklings at the duck pond. WHYYOUBESOCUTE?

Papa duck

My awesome exchange friends who I am going to miss hell of a lot next semester :( and of course STATE patty's day. Yes my college invented a holiday just so we could drink all day long. :P

I will miss you all :(

The sebastian and Alleso concert with 3 of the most awesome people I know here!

BLUE AND WHITE WEEKEND! Tailgate FTW.

Dear John

26 Apr

Movie poster that also happens to be the cover of my copy of the book :)

I am a sucker for love stories and romantic books. I hate admitting it but its true. I believe in true love and soul mates and all that fairy-tale-happily-ever-after-laugh-till-you-die stuff they show in movies and write about in books.

I may not be dreamy about it and walk around thinking someone’s going to break into song and tell me they love me, but I do like to believe that there is someone out there who is perfect for me.

What I am trying to say is that because of this I obviously watch a lot of romantic comedies (a lot that aren’t actually that comical) and read a lot of so called “chick lit”. Needless to say I have watched a few of the Nicholas Sparks books that have been adapted to screen. I know I normally like reading the books and watching the movie, however, I always had this secret bias against Nicholas Spark books and thought they weren’t my time. Which is weird because I love the movies.

Anyway, Dear John is probably one of my favorite movies and I actually got down to buying and ultimately reading the book this March/April. My opinion of Nicholas Spark has changed. I am actually considering reading some more books. Of course, it isn’t hard hitting, life changing literature and none of them will probably reach my must read list any time soon but they aren’t as bad as I thought they would be.

My favorite scene in the movie :P

The writing style is pretty much what I expected it to be. No favorite quotes or memorable lines I had to mark here but it still kept me gripped and hooked till the end. The writing is simple and descriptive but not brain twisting and confusing. It’s not even one of the love stories that inspire me to love life (One Day, Looking For Alaska) but I would still recommend Dear John.

Maybe you guys can read it and let me know what you think?

San Francisco: My Spring Break Through Instagrams

8 Apr

This year I spent my Spring Break in San Fransisco. Actually, this year was the first year I had a spring break. In India there really is no spring, you just kind of wake up one day sweating and realize that its summer.

Anyway, San Fran is an amazing city. I have never seen anything like it before. I loved it there and 5 days was just not enough to fully explore the city. I definitely want to go back there as soon as I can and hopefully stay longer.

This post is a photo post of pictures I took on my spring break. I just discovered the joy of instagram and even though it’s something a lot of people hate, I actually love. :)

Before leaving the dorm for the week.

Delicious dinner in NYC. Clams with Pasta. YUMM.

The yummiest parfait I have ever eaten. I still dream about it sometimes.

The kind of weather I was expecting. After minus temperatures I was craving some sun.

River/lake in Berkley, California. It was a gorgeous day outside and the view was amazing.

The famous Golden Gate bridge. Its spectacular up close! :)

Just a hut made out of living trees. :)

One of the buildings on Alcatraz island. :)

The bay

Stairs going down to the street I was staying on

Starfish in a tank at the discovery museum

Trees and the sun.

Steps made out of old logs at the Discovery museum.

More Golden Gate Bridge

And then again

The Hunger Games; Giving Into The Hype

2 Apr

I have known about this book for a while now, but I just never got down to reading it. Then the trailer for the movie came out and suddenly everyone was the biggest fan. I was still pretty adamant about waiting to borrow the book from someone or going back to India and then buying it because its cheaper there.

However, on my spring break, I gave in. I knew I wanted to see the movie and that I prefer reading the books before watching them. I walked into this little used bookstore while on spring break in San Francisco. Of course they only had new copies of The Hunger Games. I debated with myself a little and then finally caved and bought it.

Do I regret spending my money? Well obviously not. As soon as I reached back to State College I ordered the other two parts from Amazon. I haven’t read the third part yet because one of my friends borrowed it and I am waiting for her to finish it.

So the first one is without doubt better than its second counterpart. It’s gripping and every chapter is a cliffhanger. Is it my favorite book? No. Simply because it is too simple. The style doesn’t do anything to provoke one in terms of thinking. Granted it is a children’s book but I know a lot of other children’s books that actually made me think and piece together pieces of information. Hunger Games is a book which you just read and read and read until your eyes fall out of your head onto the floor in front of you.

I enjoyed every moment of the first book and was really excited to read the second part but struggled through the first 12 chapters and then was done with it before I could even realize.

The second part starts out way too slowly and has a lot of unnecessary detail and then the games come and they get over in a blink of an eye. Which if you ask me is sort of disappointing, especially after the first games were so exciting. The whole point of the book is kind of the games. Of course the twist at the end of book 2 was something I was not at all expecting, which surprised me because of how predictable the rest of the books are.

All said and done the books are fun, entertaining and keep you hooked and wanting more. I definitely do not regret caving in and can’t wait to read the final one, which going by many people’s reviews and opinions may be the one I absolutely hate or love to bits.

Penguins.

They appear to be such innocent, beguiling creatures. So adorable. So darn cute.

Well, from previous experience, I already know they attack. The Adelie penguins that came at me en masse while I took photos around the Aurora Australis will forever be a disturbing highlight of my life. Now I know penguins can lull you into suicidal behaviour.

My friend Sharon and I found ourselves in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego thwarted by boat scheduling difficulties in a last minute attempt to scoot over to the Chilean Antarctic territory of Isla Navarino.

Must Stop Procrastinating!

25 Mar

I have 3 tests coming up. One is tomorrow and the other two are day after. Any normal person would be freaking out and studying. I am clearly not normal. Instead of productively using my weekend to study and ace the tests and do my parents proud, I chose to spend my weekend doing the following.

1: Watch A Movie

You see I was going to watch The Hunger Games which is clearly more important than any school work because the whole world has been consumed by the hype of the movie/book. Smart people that we were, we forgot to pre-book tickets and of course couldn’t watch the movie on account of how it was sold out. Now this should have been a sign to me and I should have retreated home and sat down on my desk and got to work.

No.

I watched 21 Jumpstreet instead and it was worth every minute. I have now found a new favorite movie and throughout the weekend, I have chuckled to myself while remembering a particular scene that was hilarious. All of you must go watch this movie.

2: Walked Around Downtown

You would think that downtown State College doesn’t offer much to do. You’re wrong. As I happily discovered on Friday night, Downtown is pretty much the place to be (especially if you’re 21+). There’s food, bars, fro-yo, a theater, cupcakes, and shops. I thought I knew all of downtown. I was wrong.

3. Take another walk to Taco Bell.

Cause my friends were hungry.

4. Watch Another Movie.

Yes. I did.

Want to know what’s worse? I had already seen this one before. The HUB (student center) was playing Mission Impossible 4 and it was free. It was Friday night and my choices were stay in the dorm and study or go watch the movie with people.

Well you know what I chose.

5. Sleep In.

Pretty self explanatory.

6. Waste A Whole Day

I studied for a grand total of maybe One Hour. I have no idea what I did the whole day. Granted I woke up at 11:30 and then spoke to my mom on the phone for a good half hour. Probably took a shower for another 20 mins. Watched some TV. Probably aimlessly kept checking Facebook and Twitter and my webmail (My math scores should be coming out sometime soon) and then before you know it was 5 PM.

7. Study.

HAHA.

8. Watch Yellowcard Live.

Yes. Yes, I did.

Do I regret it? Not yet. Maybe in the future but I doubt it. They have been one of my favorite bands since 7th or 8th Grade and they were performing in my uni for FREE!

There was no way in hell I was about to miss that. Only Shannon came with me but when the music is good and the lead singer is super hot, nothing else really matters.

9. Actually Study

That would be today, Sunday. I still woke up really late though so.

10. Write This Post

I needed a break okay!

One Day

12 Mar

I am a big fan of Jim Sturgess and as soon as I saw the trailer for the movie One Day, I wanted to watch it. Of course like any other movie based on a book, I felt like had to read the book before I saw the movie.

I found the book, bought it and it took me a long time to actually get down to reading it because of all the stuff that happened in the past 3 months. However, spring break came and with that I finally managed to finish reading the book and then of course proceeded to watch the movie.

For all of you who have seen the movie, definitely read the book. I think it helps you connect certain events that happen in the movie a lot better. And of course as I always say the book is a lot better than the movie, however unlike so many other movies I can mention, this one is not horrible and I actually really enjoyed it. (Aside from Anne Hathaway’s terrible British accent, of course.)

When I first started the book I was actually a little disappointed because I was expecting something completely different but even though it was nothing like I thought it would be. It was a wonderful read. It isn’t a stupid predictable love story like so many of these kind of books tend to be. It’s a book the delves into the life of these two peoples as they struggle with life, family and self expectations. It urges you to think about your own life and reflect your choices or in my case understand that even though we all have this idea of who we are going to be or what our life is going to be like, that isn’t what will always happen. If you’re one of those lucky people then it might work out for you, but more often than not, life is unexpected and a lot more complicated than we hope for.

I love how David Nicholls portrays the struggles of each character and the internal conflict that they face. The emotions that they feel and situations that they are put in are not something you only imagine but actually empathize with and hope that you never have to go through the same. There are times when his choice of words are so effective that you get caught up in the story and forget it isn’t real.

David Nicholls manages to make you love, hate and sympathize with Dexter Mayhew as he deals with the disappointing remains of his TV career. Throughout the book, you actually notice how Dexter changes, how this thought process changes and how he “grows up”.Emma Morley’s character faces very different obstacles but she too finds herself struggling to understand how her reality became so drastically different from what she wanted.

They first meet on the 15th of July and the story catches up with them on the same date every year. I thought that was a really interesting way to tell the story because if you get it wrong, the story could feel incomplete. However, David Nicholl’s manages to weave the story together really well because not once did I feel like something was missing.

I love books that have an effect on me and One Day certainly did. It made me want to live my life more and do what I love. I think that this is one book (or movie if you prefer) that is definitely worth a read. (or watch, thought it wouldn’t have the same effect.)

State of Emergency!

26 Feb

Last Thursday State of Emergency (Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia and Alleso) came to Penn State and performed at the Bryce Jordan Center. I managed to snag a floor pass and was thrilled about that. However, being super short meant that I was constantly hit in the face every time someone decided it was decided to jump up and down.

Never the less it was a great time and I managed to get some decent-ish pictures.

The music was loud, the beats were great and energy was high. There was no way anyone could say they felt tired. Though it doesn’t beat Avicii its a close contender.

THON 2012

21 Feb

THON 2012

THON was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. THON is short for Marathon and is basically a dance marathon that the Penn State Greek Organizations established 40 years ago, in order to raise money for research in Pediatric cancer and to support families going through this tragedy. It is held every year in February and this year I had the opportunity to see what it’s all about.

6 months before, preparations for this evetn begin and students go on canning trips and hold fundraisers to raise money for THON. It is more than just a fight for cancer and a name to promote. It brings together people and creates friendships. It is one of the rare occasions you will see almost the whole Penn State Community together at one venue, supporting each other and motivating friends and colleagues to make it through the tremendous task of dancing and staying on their feet for 46 hours straight. The stands are full, energy levels are high and spirits are soaring. Everyone is united together to fight a common enemy and to help those battling this reality be brave, courageous and strong.

This year THON raised $10,686,924.83 For The Kids. That is amazing. Almost every student organization and any other willing org. raises money for THON each year. I have never felt something so incredible. People can hate on Penn State as much as they want but nothing will ever make me doubt the pride I feel for my school. People everywhere do horrendous things each day and all of those get reported with the worst of them being nick picked at every day. However, only few people can say that they actually made a difference. Penn State makes a difference every day and brightens the life of several kids who, without the help of THON and the Four Diamonds organization may not have had a second chance at life. Despite the claims that Penn State is no longer a reputable school, we all know the truth. The truth is that Penn State will actually be remembered for its amazing efforts in helping society and not the negative events the media reports now.

THON has made a huge impact on many people’s lives and has touched mine deeply. I hope one day all of you can witness THON and understand what it means to be a part of such a great event and the Penn State Community.

WE ARE… PENN STATE!

Here are some pictures of one of the most amazing weekends I have had!
