I am a big fan of Jim Sturgess and as soon as I saw the trailer for the movie One Day, I wanted to watch it. Of course like any other movie based on a book, I felt like had to read the book before I saw the movie.
I found the book, bought it and it took me a long time to actually get down to reading it because of all the stuff that happened in the past 3 months. However, spring break came and with that I finally managed to finish reading the book and then of course proceeded to watch the movie.
For all of you who have seen the movie, definitely read the book. I think it helps you connect certain events that happen in the movie a lot better. And of course as I always say the book is a lot better than the movie, however unlike so many other movies I can mention, this one is not horrible and I actually really enjoyed it. (Aside from Anne Hathaway’s terrible British accent, of course.)
When I first started the book I was actually a little disappointed because I was expecting something completely different but even though it was nothing like I thought it would be. It was a wonderful read. It isn’t a stupid predictable love story like so many of these kind of books tend to be. It’s a book the delves into the life of these two peoples as they struggle with life, family and self expectations. It urges you to think about your own life and reflect your choices or in my case understand that even though we all have this idea of who we are going to be or what our life is going to be like, that isn’t what will always happen. If you’re one of those lucky people then it might work out for you, but more often than not, life is unexpected and a lot more complicated than we hope for.
I love how David Nicholls portrays the struggles of each character and the internal conflict that they face. The emotions that they feel and situations that they are put in are not something you only imagine but actually empathize with and hope that you never have to go through the same. There are times when his choice of words are so effective that you get caught up in the story and forget it isn’t real.
David Nicholls manages to make you love, hate and sympathize with Dexter Mayhew as he deals with the disappointing remains of his TV career. Throughout the book, you actually notice how Dexter changes, how this thought process changes and how he “grows up”.Emma Morley’s character faces very different obstacles but she too finds herself struggling to understand how her reality became so drastically different from what she wanted.
They first meet on the 15th of July and the story catches up with them on the same date every year. I thought that was a really interesting way to tell the story because if you get it wrong, the story could feel incomplete. However, David Nicholl’s manages to weave the story together really well because not once did I feel like something was missing.
I love books that have an effect on me and One Day certainly did. It made me want to live my life more and do what I love. I think that this is one book (or movie if you prefer) that is definitely worth a read. (or watch, thought it wouldn’t have the same effect.)
